How Ghosts – Could of, Would of, Should of – Last

How Ghosts – Could of, Would of, Should of – Last by M.E. Kilpatrick

How Ghosts - Could of, Would of, Should of - Last

In the solitude of silence,
three ghosts of the ghost town frown,
talking and walking all around,
us who die in our noisy violence.

They speak of what life could have been,
without watching loud TV shows and ads,
children could play with moms and dads,
in the make-believe world of pretend.

The ghosts would talk about Halloween,
when parents and children did pretend,
and wearing masks was not a mortal sin,
as they talk and walk around us in quarantine.

We - the ghosts - should see our ghosts of the past,
and listen to the wail of their sirens.
We’d remember and hear as the heart rends –
how ghosts - Could of, Would of, Should of - last.
